5 Lessons Learned From Jollibee’s Founder Tony Tan Caktiong


Most of us have eaten at Jollibee, but most of us do not know how Jollibee started.
Jollibee is owned by Tony Tan Caktiong. He was the son of a cook who strived for Tony to finish school. Tony has graduated from the University of Sto. Thomas (UST) in BS Chemical Engineering course.

Tony did not use his course for wealth. He tried to start his business. He bought franchise, small ice cream parlor from Magnolia.


Tony's customers grew and many of his customers asked for different foods such as sandwiches, fries and fried chicken. Fastfood is not yet popular.


Tony's ice cream parlors grew in number throughout Manila. When Tony heard McDonald's Food Chain in America, Tony changed his Ice Cream Parlors to FastFood Restaurants.


How did they get the name "Jollibee"?


He got the name Jollibee because of Tony's personality. Make Tony happy and always busy with his business.


Here's got "Jolli" meaning "Bee" because he's always busy like a bee, "Busy as a Bee."

Today, Jollibee is home to a variety of restaurants such as: Greenwhich Pizza, Chowking, Red Ribbon, DeliFrance, Mang Inasal etc. And it is known that Jollibee not only the Philippines but also the whole world.


Here's the take-away lessons from Tony's Jollibee.


1. The Key To Being Financially Free is Not in Employment, but in Business.

Although Tony's course was BS Chemical Engineering, he did not continue his course. He did not continue to be an engineer to become an employee. He started his own business where he was happy and free.


2. Take A Risk.

Tony knew that he had finished his UST course but still tried to do business. He did not even know if his Ice Cream Parlor would be successful, but he still tried to start.


How could he be now if he not even try?


What company is Tony now working for?


Is he happy with his 8 am-5pm job?


3. Start Now and Adjust Later.

It is important to start and adjust only while the business is running.

Tony just started with a small ice cream parlor and increased the product due to the customers' wishes.

He's still planning to build the Jollibee FastFood Restaurant.


4. Create A Memorable Brand.

The concept of "Jollibee" was formed because of Tony's personality and that helped build the branding of his fastfood restaurant.


5. Conquer Your Competition.

Tony understands that various outbound fastfood restaurants are opposed to his business. So he bought these different restaurants.
